Imagination Works Vegeta Unboxing and Review

If you missed it yesterday, the gang at Bluefin, minus the big guy who was depressed over the loss of the Giants to the Dodgers in the NLDS, did a live unboxing and review of the Imagination Works Vegeta figure. This should be shipping soon if you order from BBTS, but with all the delays lately, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was delayed till November or December. Check out the video below:

This dropped right when I was falling asleep last night and I had to take a quick look. This looks pretty cool and will definitely be pre-ordering when it comes out. I know Majin Rob had concerns about the durability of the silicone joints, and some would have liked this figure to be bigger, and I want to add that if they are going to release these at a slower time frame than the other figures, looks like at most 1 or 2 a year, they should have included all the transformation like SSG and SSGSS, etc. Maybe different battle armor as well.

Pre-orders should be available soon with a September, 2021 release date at a price of 11000 yen so about $110. Below are some pics and a link to the product website. Let me know in the descriptions if you plan on getting this and which character you think should be next in line for this series! If it were me, I would do Buu next but most likely Piccolo…

Update Video: Imagination Works Son Goku – First Pictures

Today is October 30th here in the US and in Japan it will soon be the 31st and that means the release of the first Imagination Works Son Goku figure. Dragon Ball news received their figure early and has posted some pictures of the packaging and figure. They mentioned it does have a premium feel to it and nice articulation. There are a few clips included and I’m not quite sure what those are for (maybe for the pedestal?), but we will have to wait for some reviews to find out. If you pre-ordered this figure in the US, it wont ship until later this year.

Update: Below is a video of Victory Uchida and a guest doing an unboxing and the arm bend look pretty cool.

Imagination Works Son Goku Package Preview

They released the fancy new packaging for the upcoming Imagination Works Son Goku. It comes in a matte black box with chrome color changing letters and the figure on the front for that premium feel. Gone is the clear plastic windows found in S.H. Figuarts as well as the old X-Plus packaging. The new X-Plus figures starting with UI Sign Goku and Android 17 no longer have the clear plastic windows. Hopefully Figuarts doesn’t go this route as well as I like to display them inside the packaging. This releases in Japan next month and will ship in the US in December/January. Make sure to leave a comment below if you pre-ordered this figure or if you plan to skip this line.

Imagination Works Goku: Details Revealed

It wasn’t too long ago that Tamashii Nations first teases their upcoming “Imagination Works” line. A line that would fuse silicon, with other techniques in order to better hide the seams and joints of the figure. The line was touted to be 1/9 scale, resulting in this particular Son Goku release to be about 180mm.

Tamashii Nations took to Instagram to reveal more photos and details of this upcoming Son Goku release, including the accessory pieces and the release date.

..and there you have it. Son Goku will come with interchangeable face parts, hair parts and eye parts. Additionally, the figure has been given a hard release window for October, 2020. More so, this figure is set to retail for 11000JPY / $100~.

I’m pretty impressed with the eye accessories. I could explain why, but this little infographic I found says it better than I ever could:

As we has discussed in previous posts about this release, the idea of the figure having silicon in its composition leaves me feeling weary. There have been other figures in Dragon Ball figure history that attempted to fuse silicon and rubber materials with the figure; which looked great.. for a little while. Unfortunately, these figures had a tendency for the silicon parts to decay over time. Leaving one ugly result.

Imagination Works Goku to Feature Interchangeable Head

According to V-Jump’s July issue, the upcoming Imagination Works Son Goku figure will feature an interchangeable Super Saiyan head accessory. We previously reported on this brand new line of 1/9 scale figures, which are engineered to hide the seams and creases often seen on articulated action figures.

Still no word on a release date or even pricing. But I’m anticipating these to be a more premium priced figure, not quite X-Plus prices but higher than S.H. Figuarts. Full disclosure, I’m basing this purely on speculation. So we’ll just have to see!

Tamashii Nations Announces “Imagination Works” 1/9 Scale Figures

Tamashii Nations has revealed a new line of articulated 1/9 scale figures. Which means that the releases should be around 8 inches in height, depending on the character. The figures will be engineered and designed with a focus on hiding the seams and joints of the figure, allowing for the character designs to more closely resemble the designs we see in the source animation.

The Dragon Ball figure collecting community has seen this in the past, with figures utilizing vinyl and rubber materials to hide the joints. Unfortunately, these vinyl and rubber components were not long lasting and had a tendency to dry out and crack.

Additionally, Tamashii Nations has launched a new landing page for this line at their official website. However, all we’ve got to look at right now is a dark photo of a base form Goku figure:

Additionally, an alleged prototypical Imagination Works “Super Saiyan Blue Goku” photo has been making its rounds online. Couldn’t get a concrete answer on where this photo comes from, so if you have more information, please enlighten me in the comments section.

However, it does appear that this figure’s arms feature different materials and thusly the seams are much more obvious than in the Base Form Goku we’ve seen above. I’d assume this is a prototype effort that predates the Base Form Goku being marketed today.

It would appear that seamless figures have been on the radar for Tamashii Nations for quite some time. It wasn’t that long ago that there were S.H. Figuarts displays at toy shows featuring prototypical seamless figures. However, that was S.H. Figuarts, an entirely different line:

I’m curious about what this means for the future of Dragon Ball and S.H. Figuarts. Will the line be ignored in favor of this new approach? Will the two lines co-exist, as they offer different features? What will the price point be? I’m going to keep my finger on the pulse of this new line and be sure to report back when I can.
